2011-2012 Digital Humanities Speaker Series: Kenneth Dean

Kenneth Dean, the Lee Chair in Chinese Cultural Studies in the East Asian Studies Department at McGill University, is the final speaker in the 2011-2012 Digital Humanities Speaker Series. Dr. Dean will be speaking in Minor Hall Auditorium at 3:30pm on Thursday, March 29, on "Ritual Revolutions: Temple Networks Linking South China to Southeast Asia."
He will also screen his film, Bored in Heaven: A film about ritual sensation, at 3pm on Friday, March 30, in Clark Hall 107. The film is an 80-minute documentary on rituals around Chinese New Year celebrations in Putian, Fujian, Southeast China. An experiential project based on 20 years of research by Kenneth Dean and Zheng Zhenman, this film illustrates the growing intensity of local traditions, as rural villages and their temples transition into a new century. Dr. Dean directed the film, which centers on the story of the God of Theater, who is bored by the bureaucracy of heaven and comes to earth.
The Digital Humanities Speaker Series is a collaborative effort by the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities (IATH), SHANTI, and the UVA Library Scholar’s Lab.
