Jerome McGann Elected to American Philosophical Society

Prof, Jerome McGann, University Professor and John Stewart Bryan Professor of English and a founding IATH Fellow, has been elected to the American Philosophical Society, an honorary scholarly society that promotes excellence in scientific and humanities scholarship. Professor McGann, a pioneer in digital humanities research, was one of the first Fellows (with Edward Ayers) at IATH, where he created and directed the The Rossetti Archive hypermedia archive, which contains the complete writings and art of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He went on to build NINES, which is designed to utilize 21st-century technology for scholarly research of British and American literature and culture, and to write and speak extensively on the humanities in the digital age.
The APS was founded in 1743 to pursue “philosophical Experiments that let Light into the Nature of Things, tend to increase the Power of Man over Matter, and multiply the Conveniencies or Pleasures of Life.” Early members included both American and international thinkers, scientists, and artisans.
Professor McGann and an international group of 33 mathmeticians, physicists, social scientists, historians, linguists, classicists, literary scholars, artists, architects, and professional leader were elected in April, 2014. A full list of this year's members is available here.
